Oregon Proposes Strict Dairy Regulations
The Statesmen Journal reports that local lawmakers have proposed a number of vast new regulatory restrictions on large dairies in response to the regulatory disaster at Lost Valley Farm” that resulted in “more than 200 environmental violations.”
While proposals would only impact facilities with more than 2,500 cows, the impact could prove tremendous. According to the article, the broadest bill would, among other things: require the posting of bonds for new large dairies, create task forces on animal welfare, impose new limitations and requirements on the granting of permits.
It seems unlikely that large producers will escape 2019 unscathed. But how far will the regulators go? We shall see.
