European Halloumi Crisis Averted

With the Mediterranean World teetering on the brink of economic collapse, what else would politicians do but negotiate the finer points of cheese law?

Eurasian sources report that Greek and Turkish Cypriots have arrived at a “common understanding on “registering halloumi cheese as a ‘protected designation of origin’ (PDO) product under EU law.”

The agreement follows on the heels of the Greek Cypriot administration’s unilateral effort to apply for PDO status, which was met with strenuous objection from Turkish Cypriots fearful of the potential impact on their exports.

Doubtless the Cypriots have a long way to go before reunification, but if dairy has the potential to change longstanding Japanese economic policy, who’s to doubt the transformative power of cheese?
